Dimethyl disulfide is an organic sulfur compound. It is one of the odor components of the white-stink fungus, and also one of the odor components emitted when milk deteriorates under light (a degradation product of methanethiol). Industrially, dimethyl disulfide is synthesized by the method of dimethyl sulfate.
It is used as a solvent, a catalyst for oxidation, a pesticide intermediate, a coking inhibitor, etc.
Dimethyldithio and cresol react to form 2-methyl-4-hydroxybenzethiol, and then it is condensed with O,O-dimethylthiocarbamate chloride in an alkaline medium to obtain methidathion. This is an efficient and low-toxic organophosphorus insecticide with excellent efficacy in controlling rice moth, soybean stem borer and fly larvae. It can also be used in veterinary medicine to eliminate cattle fly maggots and cattle lice.
